Sourcing the stones

Each stone needs a twin of the same colour, cut, clarity and weight. A pair can be months and several parcels of rough apart before both halves reach the bench.

  1. Two matched pear-shaped blue sapphires beside a pencil drawing of a pair of drop earrings.
ChoosingThe centre stone is chosen before anything is drawn around it.
  2. Tweezers laying diamonds in two mirrored rows on a drawing of a pair of drop earrings.
MatchingEvery stone is laid on the drawing beside its twin.

Design and model

The model is cut in metal and worn for a day. The post is moved and the drop shortened until it clears the jaw and moves without spinning.

  1. Hand painting a gouache rendering of a pair of gold and sapphire drop earrings.
PaintingThe pair is painted at full size before it is modelled.
  2. Two unfinished gold drop earrings hanging level from a small brass jeweller's balance.
BalanceThe design is checked against the technical drawing for weight and drop.
Hands hold a necklace with diamonds, green details, and blue stones, above the technical drawing of the jewelry on the goldsmith's bench.
Hands paint the design of a necklace with a blue stone in the center; around them, brushes, paints, and water on the table.
Tweezers hold a cut blue gem above the palm of the hand; on the table, a jeweler's loupe.

Craftsmanship

Pavé is set under a microscope, and the two pieces are compared after every few stones. The pair is polished last, together, so both catch the light the same way.

  1. A pair of gold drop earrings side by side in a setting block, one being set under the microscope.
SettingStones are set with both pieces compared as the work goes.
  2. Pliers fitting the hinge of a gold sapphire drop earring, its finished twin on velvet.
FittingClasps and hinges are fitted so the drop moves freely.
  3. Finished pair of gold, diamond and sapphire drop earrings beside their drawing and a loupe.
FinishThe finished work is checked detail by detail against the drawing.
