Heritage Jewellery

Drawn from the archive

Heritage pieces begin with forms worn for generations: temple motifs, kundan and polki, filigree drawn by hand. We study the originals and the family pieces clients bring to us before anything new is drawn.

  1. Aged paper sketch of a temple-motif heritage necklace with measurements.
DrawingThe archive design is redrawn at full size, for how it will be worn today.
  2. Hand chasing a temple motif into a gold plate with a fine steel tool.
NakshiThe motif is chased into a gold plate by hand, one line at a time.
  3. Loose emerald beside a gold kundan setting on a wooden workbench.
StonesUncut polki and emeralds are chosen and matched to the drawing.

Modelled, then cast

A heritage design is redrawn, not copied. Clasps are made secure without breaking the old silhouette, and every design is tried on before any gold is cut.

  1. Molten gold poured from a crucible into a mould.
CastingGold is poured into the mould taken from the approved model.
  2. Jeweller shaping a gold filigree component with a file at his bench.
FiligreeWire is drawn, twisted and filed into shape by hand.

Set by the karigar

Heritage techniques are slow by nature. A single piece passes through several specialist benches over weeks, and the karigar who finishes it is the one who signs it off.

  1. Tweezers setting an uncut stone into a gold kundan pendant.
Kundan settingGold foil is burnished around each uncut stone.
  2. Jeweller placing the final polki stone on a gold heritage necklace under a lamp.
AssemblyThe last stone goes in once every section fits the drawing.
  3. Gold pendant held against a spinning polishing wheel.
PolishingThe finished piece is polished until gold and stones read as one.
